HRH Princess Anne arrives in Seychelles

HRH Princess Anne arrives in Seychelles ( Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Laurence landed in Seychelles this morning on an official three-day visit to the islands. They were greeted by representatives from the British and Seychelles government; British High Commissioner, Mr. Matthew Forbes; Mrs. Macsuzy Mondon, Minister for Education, Employment, and Human Resources; and Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, at Seychelles International Airport.

Minister Mondon, who welcomed Her Royal Highness and Vice Admiral Laurence, said, “It was a great privilege for me, on behalf of the Seychellois people, to welcome Her Royal Highness Princess Anne to our shores, especially as the Royal party chose to honor us by flying with our national airline."

British High Commissioner Matthew Forbes who will be accompanying Princess Anne during her visit said, “I was very pleased to welcome The Princess and Vice Admiral this morning and look forward to the rest of their trip.

“It's a busy agenda over the next three days, but that's a testament to the excellent organization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to Princess Anne and her husband who were keen to do as much as they could, not only to see these beautiful islands but to meet with members of the British community living and working here and understand more about the strong relationship that binds our country and Seychelles together."

Later today, The Princess will be meeting with Seychellois war veterans at the country's Cenotaph at a short wreath laying ceremony to commemorate people whose lives were lost in war. She is also expected to pay her respects to the soldiers buried at the Commonwealth War Graves site at the cemetery.

Princess Anne, who is also Chancellor of the University of London, will be joining Seychelles President Michel, Chancellor of the University of Seychelles, in the afternoon as the guest of honor for the official opening of the University of Seychelles where they will both address students and guests following the unveiling of a statue commissioned by local artist, Tom Bowers.

“For the Princess to grace such an important occasion as the opening of the university is a very special honor for us, as it is such a milestone in our history," Minister Mondon said.

In the evening, the President will be formally receiving The Princess Royal at State House where he will also be hosting a reception in honor of the Royal Party.

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday, November 30, Princess Anne will fly to Seychelles' second biggest island, Praslin, to visit the Vallee de Mai and in the afternoon will visit representatives from EU NAVFOR and Seychelles Coastguard for a briefing on the threat of piracy to the region and the joint efforts of the Seychelles and the international community to combat this activity.
