Chinese Premier lists Seychelles giant tortoises among rare cultural treasures of the world

Chinese Premier lists Seychelles giant tortoises among rare cultural treasures of the world ( Chinese Premier, Mr. Wen Jiabao, made an explicit reference to Seychelles' giant tortoises during his key speech yesterday in Shanghai on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the World Expo, an event attended by several heads of state and government, as well as the Secretary General of the UN and the Commissioners General of the Expo’s 246 pavilions (190 countries and 56 international organizations). Shanghai 2010 will remain the biggest world expo having ever been organized, with a record of 73 million visitors.

Addressing the audience during the official closing ceremony, Premier Wen Jiabao stated: “Here, you can see on display rare cultural treasures of the world: the bronze chariot and horse sculpture from China’s Warring States period, the statue of Athena from Greece, the masterpieces of French impressionist painters, the little Mermaid from Denmark, and the Aldabra giant tortoises from Seychelles.”

Seychelles offered a pair of Aldabra giant tortoises to the World Expo in 2009, and with Sichuan pandas they have become a popular spot in Shanghai Zoo.

It is estimated that most of the 20,000,000 visitors of the African Joint Pavilion – the most visited pavilion of the whole expo – have seen Seychelles’ pavilion at which more than 200,000 tourism brochures were distributed during the last 6 months, making Seychelles the African participant having distributed the biggest quantity of promotional material.

As a token of appreciation for its contribution to the success of the World Expo, Seychelles has been included in the first tour of 3 countries to be visited by a high-level expo delegation headed by Mr. Zhou Hanmin, Vice Chairman of Shanghai Committee of CPPCC (Chinese people’s Political Consultative Conference), and Deputy Director, Executive Committee of Expo 2010 Shanghai, and also including Mr. CHEN Jintian, the Director of Africa Pavilion Department. The delegation is expected in Seychelles on November 27 after visiting Botswana and on its way to Saudi Arabia.
