Seychelles minister of foreign affairs holds discussions on piracy with UK and visits EU NAVFOR HQ

Seychelles minister of foreign affairs holds discussions on piracy with UK and visits EU NAVFOR HQ ( Seychelles minister for foreign affairs, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam, visited the EU NAVFOR headquarters in Northwood Middlesex on October 28, the headquarters of Operation Atalanta, the European Union anti-piracy efforts in the Indian Ocean.

The Minister met with the deputy commander, Rear-Admiral Thomas Ernst, among other key personnel, where he was briefed on the current undertakings of the operation.

“I am very pleased to have been able to visit the Northwood facility. The EU NAVFOR military team has been vital in our efforts against the scourge of piracy. The collaboration between EU NAVFOR and the Seychelles has been exemplary, and we need to continue to be vigilant and also try new measures to try and contain the threat of piracy, which continues to menace our region, and the world," said the minister.

EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta is mandated by the United Nations Security Council to protect vessels of the World Food Program; help deter, prevent, and repress acts of piracy; protect vulnerable shipping; and monitor fishing activities in the region.

During his working visit to the United Kingdom, Minister Adam also met with minister for Africa, Mr. Henry Bellingham, at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to discuss the anti-piracy efforts being undertaken by Seychelles and its partners, as well as British involvement in Operation Atalanta.

“We discussed the importance of the efforts to bring stability in Somalia itself, as any efforts at sea need to be complemented by effective measures on the land. We also stressed the need for a regional solution to the problem of incarceration of captured pirates to truly be able to tackle piracy effectively."

Prior to these meetings, the minister also met with the secretary general of the Commonwealth, Mr. Kamalesh Sharma, to hold wider discussions on the relationship the Seychelles has with the Commonwealth.
