Seychelles longest serving teacher is recognized by President Michel

Seychelles longest serving teacher is recognized by President Michel ( VICTORIA, Mahé - Seychelles President James Michel presented a teacher from Plaisance Primary School with the Longest Serving Teacher Award at the Teachers’ Day Award ceremony held yesterday evening.

Ms. Rita Millus, a teacher for over 45 years, was honored for her long service and dedication to the students of her school.

The annual award ceremony, which is celebrating its 20th year, is held in recognition of all the teachers in Seychelles on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, which was earlier this week, on October 5, under the theme “Strengthening Partnerships for Success in Education."

In a message marking the occasion, President Michel said that the theme chosen recognized the collaborative efforts of parents and communities in building a more harmonious and prosperous society.

“The partnership approach gives communities greater opportunities to participate in and assume key roles and responsibilities in school improvement efforts and [the] decision-making process. Partnership facilitates collaboration between the Department of Education, the school councils, and communities,” said the President.

He added that, “With the advent of the Education Reform 2009/2010, teachers work in an environment characterized by change and innovation. We now have the University of Seychelles. We want quality education - it is one of our targets in the Millennium Development Calls, MDG+ process. It is imperative, therefore, that teachers get the support of parents and communities."

The ceremony also included awards for 25 Years of Continuous Service, Award for Support Staff, Community Award for Teachers, and the Retiring Teachers’ Award.
