China gives Seychelles 19 tailor-made IT scholarship courses ( VICTORIA, Mahé - The Chinese Ambassador to Seychelles, HE Mr. Wang Weiguo, today presented 19 Seychellois candidates with scholarships for a tailor-made Information Communication Technology (ICT) course.

On handing the scholarships over, the ambassador said that this unique program had been created, at the request of the Seychelles government, to meet the specific needs of IT professionals in Seychelles and it would also allow the selected participants to experience Chinese culture first hand.

“The Chinese human resources training aid is one of the eight measures announced at the third and fourth Forum on China-Africa Coorporation (FOCAC), during which China committed to training 35,000 African professionals since 2006,” said the ambassador, “Already 781 Seychellois have participated. We have already exceeded the 2010 goal of training another 125 Seychellois, and we now hope to bring the total figure up to 800 before the end of the year.”

Mr. Conrad Mederic, the director general of protocol, treaties, and consular affairs for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was also accompanied by the principal secretary, Mr. Maurice Laustau-Lalanne, said that “these scholarships show the commitment that China has to Seychelles, especially in the human resources and education sectors.”

One of the candidates attending the course, which is due to take place from October 11-30 in Shanghai and Beijing, Mr. Patrick V. Valmont, gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the group saying that “this 20 day program, which is a first for such a large group of Seychellois in a foreign country, is of great significance to us, [and] without a doubt it will help us to acquire new skills, which in turn will contribute in our performance and work output.”

Mr. Valmont also thanked the Chinese ambassador and government for creating such an interesting and specific program, and he also thanked the Seychelles government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in particular for playing a key role in making the project a reality.

The candidates were selected from a variety of government and parastatal bodies for this course, which includes a visit to the Shanghai Expo, the Great Wall of China, the Beijing Olympic Stadium, among other activities. The candidates include Mr. Darrel Monthy, Mr. Jonathan Bonnelame, Mr. Paul Ah-Shung, Mr. Barry Assary, Mr. Ralph Hitie, Mr. Ronny Volcere, Mr. Curtis Marengo, Mr. Wilness Franchette, Ms. Agnes Pillay, Mr. Francis Andrade, Mr. Larry Vidot, Mr. Jemmy Desir, Mr. Dave Henriette, Mr. Carlos Hoareau, Mr. Virtheep Kumar, and Mr. Ron Uzice. They will be accompanied by Mr. Terence Malbrook, the project coordinator, and Ms. Therese Onezia from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
