Germany pledges support to Seychelles as regional center for the prosecution of piracy ( NEW YORK, NY - In the presence of Seychelles Ambassador Ronald Jean Jumeau, Ambassador Peter Wittig, the Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations, and Ms. Erenina Monasebian, Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), signed an agreement, on July 16, in support of the Republic of Seychelles.

According to this agreement, Germany will assist with training within the judicial sector of the Seychelles through the UNODC with over US$400,000.

“The negative impact of piracy on international maritime traffic, international trade, and international security require all our joint efforts to tackle this challenge. Germany appreciates the efforts of the government of Seychelles to contribute to this international fight against piracy and is pleased to be able to assist in strengthening the regional capacities through our cooperation with UNODC," said Ambassador Wittig.

The signing took place at the German mission in New York, and both Germany and the UNODC lauded the Seychelles for taking the lead role in apprehending, prosecuting, and imprisoning pirates.

Ambassadors Jumeau, the Permanent Representatives of the Republic of the Seychelles to the United Nations, thanked Germany for the funds and for responding to Seychelles’ appeal for help from the international community and highlighted the importance of the Seychelles government's growing partnership with UNODC in building infrastructure and capacity to prosecute and imprison pirates.

The German ambassador and Ms. Monasebian commended Seychelles on the highly successful international symposium on maritime security hosted last week, and for being at the forefront of the latest developments in the regional collaborations.
