New Wonders of the World

( NEWS FROM THE World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)

Madrid 6th July 2007 – On the eve of the announcement of the results of the competition for the New 7 Wonders of the World, UNWTO in welcoming the beneficial tourism potential of this initiative, underscores the importance of ensuring that intensified sustainability and destination management programmes are put in place by the winners.

The original list of Wonders was concentrated in the Mediterranean region and six of them no longer exist. The new competitors have been drawn from around the world and include some of the most important tourism icons, including several which have significant visitor numbers or delicately balanced ecosystems. The high profile voting process has given them increased exposure in the media and over the internet.

Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli said that: “While UNWTO has not been involved in this process we have followed it closely and well appreciate the promotional value of the exercise for destinations making the short list. At the same time we are acutely aware of the consequences of increased visitation in terms of environmental impact and we would urge the winners to ensure that their sustainability planning and destination management adequately reflects this reality. “

UNWTO is the central UN Agency for Tourism and has developed a series of programmes and indicators to support sustainable tourism development.
