New environmental push from IMEX
Announced by IMEX at the end of its fifth show in Frankfurt, the new Green Supplier Award will be run in partnership with the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC) and alongside IMEX’s established Green Awards – the only ones of their kind for the meetings industry.
The annual award is open to any meetings industry supplier, such as a hotel, convention centre or visitor bureau, that can demonstrate innovative and practical ways in which it has prevented waste and reduced overall environmental impact. A panel of independent judges from the meetings and conservation industries will be looking closely for success measures in three areas – planning, implementation and evaluation. Each short list nominee will also be independently verified and scrutinised by an environmental auditor before the final winner is chosen.
Says IMEX Marketing and Operations Director, Carina Bauer, “In our view, the time was right to launch this Award. There are so many exciting new facilities being built in different parts of the world that have embraced green design and development principles. But we also want to encourage existing operators who’ve taken considerable steps to refurbish or redevelop buildings or services in line with environmental best practice to come forward too. This award is not intended to be a recognition of perfection, but of the efforts, focus and commitment that meetings industry suppliers have shown to move with the times and respond positively to the green debate.”
Green audit will shape Best Practice
IMEX’s commitment to the environment is already evident in a number of different projects, including its annual Green Meetings Award, Commitment to the Community Award and, launched two years ago, a Green Exhibitor Award. Regent Exhibitions, the company behind the award-winning global trade show, will also shortly complete its first ever ‘green’ audit. This extensive and detailed examination of all of its office, travel and exhibition support systems and processes in the UK and Germany is intended to give the IMEX team further insight into potential waste and energy savings as well as possible environmental improvements. In time, it is also expected to form the basis of best practice recommendations for IMEX suppliers in both countries.
According to Marketing and Operations Director, Carina Bauer, “The intention is not just to talk up green issues but to live them on a daily basis too. Our green audit is about encouraging and leading grass roots change across the industry,” she says.
New Green Suppliers Directory launches
At the same time IMEX, in association with Green Global Village and supported by the Green Meetings Industry Council and the MCI Group, has launched The Green Suppliers Directory. This new online global portal and database will help meetings industry planners and event organisers to make better-informed decisions based on the ‘eco’ credentials of listed suppliers.
