The United Nations Global Compact admits IH&RA as an official participant

The United Nations Global Compact admits IH&RA as an official participant (Forimmediaterelease.net) This month, the International&Hotel and Restaurant Association became an official participant of the United Nations Global Compact.

The UN Global Compact is policy initiative for businesses that are committed to the principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. The ten principles of the UN Global Compact are as follows.

Businesses should . . .

Human Rights

Principle 1: support and respect the protection of internationally-proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labour Standards

Principle 3: uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labor; and
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment

Principle 7: support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-Corruption

Principle 10: work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

The private sector is a driving force in globalization. By adhering to these principles, businesses participating in the UN Global Compact “can help ensure that markets, commerce, technology, and finance advance in ways that benefit economies and societies everywhere.”

IH&RA’s core principles align well with the UN Global Compact: ending child exploitation in tourism and the hotel industry, promoting sustainable tourism in order to effectively reduce negative environmental impacts of climate change, preserving the surrounding culture and heritage of a region, advocating an international standardization for hotels and restaurants, and supporting an industry that creates millions of job opportunities.

Dr. Ghassan AIDI, president of IH&RA, explained, “The future of the private sector is entirely dependent on the future of this planet. It is the responsibility of all businesses to adhere to the principles of the UN Global Compact in order to ensure that society and the environment flourish by our presence, not become hindered by it.”

IH&RA was founded in 1869 in Koblenz, 138 years ago. The organization moved to Paris in 1946, and finally to Geneva in 2008. It is the only global business organization representing the hospitality industry worldwide. Officially recognized by United Nations as the voice of the private sector globally, IH&RA monitors and lobbies all international agencies on behalf of this industry. Its members represent more than 200,000 hotels and 6 million restaurants. For more information, please visit our website at www.ih-ra.com.

The United Nations Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses, committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.
