Faiz aims for career boost at Brunei Open

Faiz aims for career boost at Brunei Open (Forimmediaterelease.net) Brunei’s Faiz Damit will be hoping to get his professional career off to a flying start when the Brunei Open 2009 begins at the Empire Golf and Country Club from July 30 to August 2.

The 23-year-old turned professional in January this year and will be following the footsteps of fellow compatriot Pengiran Hassanal who made his foray into the play-for-pay ranks in 2007.

The Brunei Open 2009 will be the second time that Faiz is featured in the US$300,000 full field Asian Tour event. He first played in the 2008 edition as an amateur where he posted rounds of 79 and 76 to miss the weekend cut.

“My putting let me down when I first played in the Brunei Open last year as a[n] amateur. I hope to putt better and make it to the weekend rounds this year,” said Faiz.

Faiz has also partnered with Pengiran in the Fortis International Challenge in 2008. The duo’s four-day total was 13-over-par 301, however, they failed to book one of the three tickets for Brunei to the Omega Mission Hills World Cup.

The Bruneian, who made it to the final stage of the Asian Tour Qualifying School earlier this year, will now attempt to take another shot at glory by competing against the best on the Asian Tour.

The stellar field from the Asian Tour that will headline the event includes the Filipino trio of Frankie Minoza, Juvic Pagunsan, and Artemio Murakami; Chinese Taipei’s Lu Wen-teh; Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant; Korea’s Mo Joong-kyung; and Australians David Gleeson, Scott Hend, and defending champion Rick Kulacz.

“My hope is to compete regularly on the Asian Tour and gain as much experience as I can on the tour. Ultimately, my ambition is to win an Asian Tour event,” said Faiz.

“Professional golf is still new in Brunei and producing [a] winner on the Asian Tour might still a long journey but anything can happen in golf over four days, and you never know, a winner from Brunei might emerge on the tour soon,” added the Bruneian.

Brunei Shell Petroleum will title sponsor the Brunei Open, while other partners include Brunei Tourism, under the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources; The Empire Hotel and Country Club; the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports; Brunei Darussalam Golf Association; Cross Creek; and Srixon.
