Cape Town to host the 6th World Paediatric Congress in 2013
The right to host the 6th congress at the Cape Town International Convention Centre was won by the Paediatric Cardiac Society of South Africa, with a local organizing committee chaired by Dr. Christopher Hugo-Hamman.
This will be the first time the congress will take place in Africa.
Aimed at highlighting the international science community's latest technological advances and research findings, the congress will also have a special focus on heart disease in Africa.
Cape Town Tourism's presence at the 2009 conference promotes the destination to the medical personnel who will be attending in 2013. It is likely that many of the delegates will consider longer stays; possibly extending the trip into a family holiday.
Speaking from Cairns, Cape Town Tourism's marketing services manager, Wendy van der Byl, reported significant interest in Cape Town, “Although most people have already heard that Cape Town is one of the world¹s most beautiful destinations, the 2010 FIFA World Cup has certainly put us on the map and curiosity is at an all time high."
The Paediatric Congress brings a well-traveled, wealthy visitor to the city and adds to the growing profile of Cape Town as a leading business tourism and conferencing destination. Cape Town Tourism CEO, Mariette du Toit-Helmbold, comments that business events are essential for sustaining guaranteed year-round tourism revenue, “Even if business people initially attend conferences and meetings on their own, they will often return with their families on holiday."
The 6th Paediatric Congress takes place between February 17-22, 2013.
