"Archaeological Adventure of East Africa" featured at Archaeological Institute of America’s first annual gala

( NEW YORK, New York – Ethiopian Airlines Journeys, together with the Tanzania Tourism Board, launched an “Archaeology Adventure of East Africa” at the Archaeological Institute of America/Archaeology Magazine’s Gala Dinner, April 28, 2009 at Capitale in New York City. During the Gala, the AIA honored Harrison Ford and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for their generous roles in increasing the positive image and awareness of archaeology. The master of ceremonies for the evening was James Delgado, a world-renowned author, television host, and archaeologist who has led many of the most important shipwreck expeditions of the last four decades.

Ethiopian Airlines Journeys and the Tanzania Tourist Board donated this fantastic package as one of the featured items in the gala’s live auction. The “Archaeological Adventure of East Africa” received a tremendous reaction from the crowd of AIA members and partners. Sandhya Jain Patel, an Indian art specialist and auctioneer from Christie's, commented, “If I could pick one trip to go on, the Archaeological Adventure of East Africa would be it.”

The Ethiopian package will feature stops in Axum, the reputed resting place of the “Ark of the Covenant,” along with Lalibela, where travelers marvel at the 12 rock-hewn churches, carved from solid red volcanic rock in the 12th century by King Lalibela. In Tanzania, travelers will be able to visit the Olduvai Gorge, the “Cradle of Mankind,” and Laetoli Footprints, where the Leakeys discovered the first humanoid skull 50 years ago.

This special archaeology package was not only auctioned off at the gala, but has been added to the list of exciting packages that Ethiopian Airlines Journeys has to offer. Please visit for more information.

Ethiopian Airlines Journeys was represented at the dinner by Mr. Gobena Mikael, director of Americas for Ethiopian Airlines. Mr. Mikael commented on the night saying, “It was so wonderful to see all of the excitement surrounding the Ethiopian package during the auction.
