IBERIA TAKES DELIVERY OF NEW AIRBUS A-319
- Iberia promotes awareness of the need to protect rich native biodiversity at all the destinations to which it flies
Iberia has taken delivery of a new, 141-seat A-319. Assembled in the Airbus Hamburg plant, the aircraft has been registered as EC-KEV, and christened the “Urogallo” (Spanish capercaillie), in line with new its policy of naming aircraft for protected Spanish species, which took effect at the beginning of this year.
It is the fifth aircraft to join the Iberia fleet this year, all of them belonging to the Airbus A-320 family, and all bearing the name and picture of an endangered Spanish species, include the Águila Imperial Ibérica (Iberian imperial eagle), the Lince Ibérico (Iberian lynx), the Oso pardo (brown bear), and the Cigüeña Negra (black stork).
In addition to the picture on the fuselage, which will remain until the species is out of danger, the new A-319 will carry detailed information in passenger seat pockets about the Spanish capercaillie, is now found only in the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian mountains.
This month’s issue of the in-flight magazine Ronda Iberia contains a feature article about another emblematic Spanish species, the black stork.
The new aircraft brings to fifteen the number of Airbus A-319s in the Iberia fleet. The aircraft features all the latest technical advances and makes less noise than others of similar characteristics, while also providing better service to passengers. It is a member of the Airbus A-320 family which includes the A-319, the A-320 and the A-321. Iberia now operates 85 such aircraft.
Today, Iberia is Spain’s leading airline and also leader on routes linking Europe with Latin America. It posted an operating income of about 5.4 billion euros, net earnings of 116.1 million euros and an Ebitdar of 790.5 million euros in 2006. It is also distinguished by its commitment to socially and environmentally responsible conduct. Along with its franchise partner Iberia Regional, Iberia operates some 1,000 flights each day to about 100 different destinations. Last year, Iberia carried a total of 33 million passengers. It is a member of the oneworld airline alliance, along with American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, JAL, LAN, Malev, Qantas and Royal Jordanian.
