South African Tourism has announced three, key, senior appointments as it continues to drive international and domestic tourism to South Africa. The new appointments are:
Ian Utermohlen – Manager: Advertising and Marketing
Wendy Tlou – General Manager: PR and Communications
Sugen Pillay – Events Platform Manager

All three will be part of the senior management team of SA Tourism with a particular focus on developing a positive image and awareness of South Africa as a tourist destination for both leisure and business.

‘We continue to strengthen our senior team at SA Tourism in order to capitalise on and drive the growth of the industry. Both Wendy Tlou and Ian Utermohlen have extensive experience in the fields of international marketing and communications, and Sugen Pillay, who will head up a new division targeted at bringing major sporting and cultural events to South Africa is a tourism industry stalwart,” commented CEO, Moeketsi Mosola.

Utermohlen joins SA Tourism from Proctor & Gamble, one of the world’s leading consumer goods companies, where he was most recently the marketing manager for Gillette in Africa. Prior to that he was at Nestle, the international foods group. In his roles at these major international organisations he has been involved in the marketing, advertising, promotion and management of brands including Duracell, Mach 3, Oral B, and Kit Kat. SA Tourism expects him to add significant value given this background of consumer brand marketing.

Wendy Tlou has worked for SA Tourism in the United Kingdom and Germany since 2003, and before that as a public relations consultant with two of South Africa’s leading agencies. She has gained substantial on-the-ground experience in two of South Africa’s largest markets in her previous roles at SA Tourism. Her key deliverables include developing a global communications strategy aimed at both internal and external stakeholders.

Pillay will establish a new unit within the organisation, promoting South Africa as a destination for major, international sporting and cultural events. He previously specialised in the acquisition of tourism-related events and projects covering aspects such as research, strategic planning, economic impact assessment, and business planning. Pillay has also worked for the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism as Director: Tourism Research and Development , and has headed his own consultancy business in this field.
