LE Grand Hôtel Cannes: Awarded for its unique natural setting and sustainable management in Cannes, France
The property is always looking to be as sustainable as possible by improving its operating methods and by paying particular attention to its natural setting. And for the third year in a row Green Globe has award the hotel certification for its sustainable operations and management.
“Getting the Green Globe certification for the third time brings pride to all our teams. This recertification, with a high conformity rate of 84%, is a reward for the hotel and also for all of its stakeholders who daily help us in our sustainable approach to improvement,” said Victor Basquin, Sustainable Development Manager.
The past year has seen a number of new innovations at the hotel to keep pace with its green ethos. Introduction of a technologically advanced polystyrene compactor, reduces waste volume and increased recycling capacity up to 80%.
To further reduce the hotel’s ecological impact, part of their CO2 emissions where offset via the Alto Huayabamba Program, a community-based reforestation project in the Amazon. The Program works with the fair-trade, organic cocoa farmers’ cooperative ACOPAGRO, located in the San Martin region of Peru. 32t of CO2e were offset, representing a quarter of the hotel’s emissions (outside of scope 3). This equivalent value represents all emissions generated by hotel’s purchasing processes for good and services and home-to-work journeys by employees.
To further promote a low carbon lifestyle and transition to alternate transport solutions, LE Grand Hôtel Cannes worked with the car manufacturer Tesla to install 3 electric vehicle-charging stations on site, one of which is universal for all electric vehicles. These charging stations were the first installed on the Riviera.
Supporting community initiatives, a partnership with local association Save the Siagne River and Canal (Association de Sauvegarde de la Siagne et de son Canal) was initiated. The Association leads a teaching program in several local primary schools to raise children’s awareness of the need to preserve biodiversity.
And finally, being a part of the world-renowned Cannes Film Festival, LE Grand Hôtel was delighted to host the crew of MV Sam Simon, the forth vessel of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society fleet, along with its founder and Green Peace co-founder, Paul Watson. The hotel was also pleased to provide technical support and donated equipment to the Sam Simon crew.
