Women’s Day “Be Bold For Change” theme echoes at Corinthia Hotel London
Corinthia Hotel London’s 2017 Neuroscientist in Residence program is advocating change internally by using evidence that shows that our brains change in response to what we experience, a process called neuroplasticity.
The hotel’s Neuroscientist in Residence Dr. Tara Swart believes that if we improve the plasticity or flexibility of the brain, then we set ourselves up for creating sustainable behavior change, and become better at handling change that is thrust upon us.
“By harnessing the power of neuroplasticity we can over-write unwanted behaviors and train our brains to create new neural pathways that correlate to desired behaviors,” says Tara.
“This applies to both men and women,” says Tara, “although in terms of emotional intelligence most women start with an advantage as they already have more connectivity between the left and right sides of their brain.”
Creating new neural pathways can enhance resilience and creativity, two key characteristics needed in a changing world striving for more gender inclusivity and better ways of working.
Learning how brains can be trained and habits adapted makes us more mentally resilient which allows us to rebound from unexpected setbacks, adapt to change and keep stress levels under control. Tara adds: “Neurons that fire together, wire together. Our brain is a ‘use it or lose it’ type of organ.”
Tara is the only top-tier leadership coach with both a PhD in neuroscience and medical career as a psychiatrist. She works with some of the most successful companies around the world to help their executives achieve marginal gains in their behavior through brain training. She also sits on five advisory boards and councils including Quest, a global leadership institute for early career women.
As part of her residency at Corinthia Hotel London this year, Tara is giving a series of talks. The next talk, in April, will focus on the dark side of leadership: Psychopaths, impostor syndrome and the boardroom’s greatest untapped resource. Hotel guests and visitors can sample two different Brain Power packages at the hotel:
