Actions of the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism at COP 22

Actions of the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism at COP 22 (Forimmediaterelease.net) Within the framework of COP22 in Marrakech, the Ministry of Tourism reaffirmed Morocco's sustainable tourism strategy through several side events with its international and African partners.

Morocco, which has chosen to place sustainable and responsible tourism at the heart of its tourism strategy “Vision 2020," is relying on many innovative initiatives to make the kingdom a reference destination for sustainable tourism.

Within the framework of COP22, the Ministry of Tourism organized three side events aimed at different targets around actions carried out to promote sustainable tourism, create wealth, and promote natural and cultural heritage. They were as follows:

1. The Ministerial Forum on Tourism and Climate Challenges in Africa

Thursday, November 10, 2016, 3:00-4:30 pm, Blue Zone, COP22 Village

The forum brought together some 15 African tourism ministers with the aim of reaffirming the importance of sustainable tourism in climate discussions at the COP level. Sustainable tourism, a true lever for development, is also one of the solutions to fight climate change on the African continent. A formal commitment by the stakeholders of this forum in favor of sustainable tourism manifested itself in the form of a Joint Declaration and the signing of the African Charter on Sustainable Tourism - a reference framework for the development of tourism in Africa. This will ensure its inscription in a sustainable dynamic, at the same time reconciling economic and social progress, while preserving the environment and respecting local specificities and cultural diversities.

2. The Sustainable Tourism Solutions Conference

Thursday, November 10, 2016, 7-8:30 pm, Espace des Solutions, Salle SEBOU, Green area, Village of the COP22

The Sustainable Tourism Solutions Conference promoted specific initiatives for sustainable tourism for the climate, initiated by the Ministry of Tourism and its partners at the COP22. This conference highlighted pilot projects and innovative initiatives deployed along the tourism value chain that can be duplicated on a larger scale.

- Initiative of a category of trophies for Morocco Sustainable Tourism dedicated to the climate

Introduced as an unmissable annual event, the Morocco Sustainable Tourism Trophies celebrated and rewarded initiatives and ideas committed to respecting the different potentialities of the Moroccan regions. The competition was open to projects related to the following themes: environment and biodiversity, culture and intangible heritage, equity and social responsibility, sustainable territory, and sustainable event. This year, and exclusively for COP22, a new category “Tourism and Climate" was introduced.

- Environmental labeling initiative at the level of accommodation establishments

In partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and with the support of the International Climate Initiative funded by the German government, the Ministry of Tourism launched the environmental labeling project for tourist establishments. Initially adopted in Nantes and then deployed in Ile-de-France during COP21, this initiative will be both a tool for monitoring the environmental performance of hoteliers as well as a tool for informing the consumer.

- “Good for Climate" initiative: Morocco, the second country in the world to introduce the low carbon initiative

After France, it is Morocco who became the second country to join the “Good for Climate" initiative. This concept was introduced by the Ministry of Tourism and the High Commission for Waters and Forests and the Fight against Desertification, with the support of the Sustainable Tourism Project of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and in partnership with The French association “Bon pour le Climat." Its aim is to mobilize chefs and establishments in the hotel industry to produce responsible cuisine, respecting three criteria: the season, the local, and the vegetable.

3. The International Symposium under the theme “Developing sustainable tourism in the context of climate change," organized by 10 YFP

November 10-12, 2016, Palmeraie Golf Palace, Marrakech

The Sustainable Tourism Program Symposium of the 10-Year Framework for Sustainable Consumption and Production was a forum for the exchange of experiences and the establishment of links between its members.

Open to the public, this symposium proposed a series of workshops on the major issues related to sustainable development in tourism. It also provided a privileged place to study and validate the key environmental indicators for the tourism sector for monitoring the implementation of Agenda 2030 on climate and sustainable development.
