Historical notes: 260th anniversary since Captain Nicholas Morphey took possession of the Seychelles islands in the name of the King of France (Forimmediaterelease.net) An important historical anniversary on this November 1 took place 260 years ago, on Monday, November 1, 1756, when Captain Nicholas Morphey took possession of the Seychelles islands in the name of the King of France. He gave the islands the name of SECHELLE and laid the Stone of Possession at what is now Lapoudriere in Victoria on the main island of Mahe. Seychelles was uninhabited when it was discovered.

The mid-ocean islands of the Seychelles is today an independent country. Danny Faure is President of the archipelago, Patrick Pillay is Speaker of the National Assembly, and Mathilda Twomey is Chief Justice. It obtained its independence from Great Britain in 1976 with James Mancham as the founding President. He was followed by Albert Rene in 1977 and James Michel in 2004.
