Seychelles celebrates 246th anniversary of first Indian settlers to its shores ( Seychelles is today celebrating the 246th anniversary since the first Indian settlers arrived to its shores.

A commemoration ceremony was held this morning at the National Cultural Centre in Victoria, which houses the Wall of History honoring Seychellois people of Indian origins. The wall was unveiled as part of the Seychelles-India Day celebrations in 2015.

Speaking at the event, the association’s Chairperson, Ramu Pillay, said the Indians who first came to Seychelles’ shores have played an important role to make the country the melting pot of Seychelles that it is today.

He thanked the government of Seychelles and Minister St.Ange for putting the Seychelles-India Day celebrations on the country’s calendar of national events.

On his part, High Commissioner Panda thanked the Indian Association with the support of the government of Seychelles through the Department of Culture for such an initiative to document and commemorate an important part of Seychelles’ history.

Minister St.Ange said, “We are where we are today because we have been able to work together.

“We need to keep on working so that everybody finds themselves in this one Seychelles that we have.”

Minister St.Ange called on the Indian Association to work together with the Department of Culture to have a book that will mark this part of the country’s history, and to have it launched next year - an idea which was welcomed by those present.

He also called on the musicians and artists of Seychelles to prepare a theme song for the Seychelles-India Day and to have it for this year’s celebrations in October.
