Aviation industry climate change website re-launched

( GENEVA, 23 September 2008 - A key website profiling the air transport sector's track-record and future actions in tackling environmental issues such as climate change has been relaunched. The site,, is an initiative of the commercial aviation industry and highlights the technology solutions, operational improvements and infrastructure efficiencies that are being researched and implemented across the world. It aims to answer the questions being raised by environmental groups and members of the public about aviation's impact on the environment and in particular climate change.

Paul Steele, Executive Director of cross-industry coordination body the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), says, “In April, chief executives representing all sectors of the aviation industry including the largest aircraft and engine manufacturers, gathered in Geneva to sign the Commitment to Action on Climate Change. This declaration has resulted in even greater collaboration across the industry on tackling this important challenge.

“We are seeing airports, airlines and air navigation providers working together to see how each party can help the other to reduce overall environmental impacts. The makers of aircraft - normally tough competitors - are working together to find solutions to environmental challenges. On a global basis, industry bodies are developing new procedures and processes that underpin the actions by all parts of the industry."

The new-look website has been established to provide members of the flying public and those working in the industry with the science and facts on aviation and its climate change impact, while also detailing the huge amount of work being undertaken across the industry.

Says Steele, “As the world continues to focus on tackling the important issue of climate change, industries, governments and individuals have to assess and limit their impact.

“I am proud to say that aviation's coordinated approach to reducing its environmental footprint has already demonstrated major progress in improving fuel efficiency, reducing noise and eradicating soot. The industry is well on track to achieve even more. In fact, it would be hard to find another industry that has already achieved so much.

“With the backing of all the major players, aviation will have a future that ensures we can continue to serve the world economy, while using the latest technology, operational procedures and an efficient infrastructure to achieve limit and reduce emissions. By visiting, passengers and industry insiders alike can understand more about the latest projects underway. It is a valuable resource."

The new website provides more interactivity and audio-visual content, as well as a blog to encourage increased dialogue between industry environmental experts and the public.
