Port of Spain celebrates city month

Port of Spain celebrates city month (Forimmediaterelease.net) PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Port of Spain, a city known for its year-round festivals, aesthetic highlights and pulsating energy will celebrate its 102nd Anniversary in the month of June 2016 with a series of activities reflecting the over-arching theme - ‘A City in Positive Transition.’

In 1914, Port of Spain recaptured its municipal rights, moving from a town board to City Corporation. Through the patronage of His Worship the Mayor Keron Valentine, the celebration kicked off with the Bert Allette 5K Run/Walk on June 5 and culminates with the annual awards ceremony on June 26 at the City Hall Auditorium in Port of Spain.

Known for its glitzy pre-Lenten Carnival celebration, Port of Spain’s city month will include a partnership with fashion designer and Project Runway Winner, Anya Ayoung Chee to produce a Fashion and Carnival themed event called: ‘FASHION AND MAS ROCKS THE CITY’ on June 10. The City will come alive with the sounds of steel drums as the action moves to St James where live steel bands will take over the streets of Port of Spain on June 11. The merriment dissipates on the morning of Sunday June 12 as the public is invited to a special religious service at the Holiness Revival Ministries Church in Woodbrook.

A number of educational workshops are also planned to discuss some of the issues facing the city and will include participation from the general public.

Spanning from the Gulf of Paria and cuddled by the Northern Range, Port of Spain is a beautiful city loaded with exhilarating activities for everyone. The city’s enviable culinary landscape is a gastronomic narrative of flavors, encapsulating mouth-watering street food and fine dining cuisine. Bustling market vendors on narrow streets juxtapose the city’s cutting-edge fashion industry, making shopping an even more exciting experience. The intoxicating strip of Ariapita avenue, lined with innumerable bars and restaurants creates the perfect atmosphere for an authentic ‘trini lime.’

Visitors coming to the capital are cautioned to wear comfortable shoes since the city is best explored by foot. The Queen’s Park Savannah best-known as “De Savannah”, is Port of Spain’s largest open space – and the world’s largest traffic roundabout is easily the perfect place to enjoy ice-cold coconut water or an afternoon walk. Set apart from the average Caribbean capital, Port of Spain offers immeasurable activities that can keep your adrenaline pumping and your taste buds salivating for more of its metropolitan vigor.
