Jumeirah at Etihad Towers BeeKind to the environment and communities
Jumeirah at Etihad Towers was recently awarded its recertification by Green Globe receiving a notable compliance score of 88% against accredited criteria.
Stefan Fuchs, General Manager at the hotel, said, “Many people nowadays are more and more concerned about what is healthy for them. Thankfully, we are all becoming increasingly interested in what is good for our environment.”
“This a great achievement for us as we earned our first Green Globe certification back in 2014 with a score of 85%. Since then, the team at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers has been working hard towards recertification with the courageous aim to increase the score by 1%. We are proud that we have not only achieved our target but went way beyond it attaining a final score of 88%. We can also report that many successful projects have been implemented to protect our environment,” added Mr Fuchs.
Various social and environmental initiatives that benefit local and international communities have been launched at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. The hotel has introduced organic BeeKind ( www.gilchristsoames.com/collections/beekind.html ) amenities by Gilchrist and Soames in guest and residence rooms. These room toiletries are produced from 100% natural ingredients including honey, organic extracts of red clover, calendula and chamomile and do not contain any artificial colors or dyes. Gilchrist and Soames donate a portion of the net proceeds from the BeeKind products to support the declining honeybee population through much needed sustainable pollination research.
The housekeeping team at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers has also recently taken part in a novel green initiative called Soap for Hope ( http://sealedair.com/soap-hope ). The scheme organized by the Sealed Air Corporation encourages hotels to donate discarded soap which are recycled and made into new soap bars for impoverished communities in Cambodia. Colleagues have donated over 73kg of soap to the project as part of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers’ Corporate Social Responsibility ( www.jumeirah.com/en/hotels-resorts/abu-dhabi/jumeirah-etihad-towers/facilities-and-services/corporate-social-responsibility-jumeirah-at-etihad-towers/ ) and efforts to reduce waste. These soap slivers will be transported to Cambodia and then bleached, pressed and dried to create new bars of soap for rural communities without access to basic sanitation and healthcare. The Soap for Hope program aims to reduce illness and rates of infection in slum communities. It also provides a source of income for the local families responsible for producing the soap bars. Every six months, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers will send further donations as part of its continued commitment to support the scheme. This is a simple yet effective way of benefiting those in need and reducing waste.
The Jumeirah at Etihad Towers team is constantly seeking new ways to support the local community. In their latest project the hotel teamed up with Enable, a social enterprise group that supports the talents of those with special needs and provides them with beneficial employment opportunities. Enable, in partnership with the Desert Group ( www.desertgroup.ae/en/article/learn-about/corporate-social-responsibility-old.html ), offers a range of quality home and garden plants which are created by a dedicated team of employees with learning difficulties. The plant boxes and arrangements are environmentally friendly and made of re-used elements and used organic soil. The initiative provides an interesting and engaging path for all staff into the world of work.
The housekeeping team at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers has already ordered 47 pieces from Enable and the floral displays will be used in public areas and the spa to raise awareness of this excellent community program. Every six months a new delivery will be made with 80 percent of the proceeds made from each plant used to finance the running costs of Enable and 20 percent of the sales price given directly to the talented people who produced them.
