Reunion Island: A diving paradise

Reunion Island: A diving paradise ( Nearly 400,000 people practice scuba diving in France. With this in mind, Reunion Island Tourism (IRT) will once again participate in the 2016 Dive Show to help promote and market the exceptional richness of the marine biodiversity of the island.

This year, the show has the theme “Hands off my sea!” setting the tone for the 18th edition of the Dive Show which opens its doors today, Friday, January 8, and runs until January 11 at the Parc des Expositions Porte de Versailles Paris. This year the exhibition hosts nearly 400 exhibitors on more than 13,000 m².

Naturally protected by a coral reef, the lagoons of Reunion Island offers an ideal setting for diving enthusiasts to discover the underwater marine world. The exhibition in Paris is a great opportunity to share the exceptional riches of the marine biodiversity of Reunion Island. With some 150 species of hard coral and 500 species of fish, the coral reef of Reunion Island is “one of the richest diving grounds in the world!”

Along the west coast of the island near Saint-Gilles Saint-Pierre, the lagoon stretches over 25 km of golden or black sand beaches.

At the Reunion Island stand, visitors will learn about the broad range of water activities offered on Reunion Island, such as snorkeling, paddling, transparent kayaking, fishing, sailing, kite-surfing, jet skiing, and also off-shore activities like whale and dolphin watching.

The big news this year from Reunion Island is the resumption of surfing on the beach of Boucan Canot! Swimming, surfing, body boarding, and other water activities have returned to service since December 11 on the beach of Boucan Canot after installing anti-shark nets to ensure the security of swimmers and surfers.

Reunion Island's private sector participants that will be present alongside the IRT and will share their experiences are Navy Reunion B'Leu Ocean, the Committee for Studies and Underwater Sports Reunion, and Coral and Scuba Blue O'Sea.

On Reunion Island, as in mainland France, most clubs are affiliated with the French Federation of Study and Underwater Sports (CMAS). Supervision is provided by state qualified instructors to ensure maximum safety.

Reunion Island will hold a press conference at the opening of the exhibition later today at 1100 am at its stand.

The President of the Committee of Studies and Underwater Sports on Reunion Island, Mr. Jean-Marc Charel, will speak at a second press conference entitled “The Island of Reunion, exceptional ecotourism destination,” later on Friday between 2 pm and 3 pm.

Visitors to the show and the Reunion Island stand are reminded not to miss the contest organized in partnership with the regional airline Air Austral and the island-based diving clubs as one person will be the lucky winner of the draw which will take place Monday, January 11 at 2:00 pm on Stand A11.
