Constance Belle Mare Plage Mauritius: Second year of continuous improvement
Green Globe certifies companies worldwide based on their economic, social and environmental sustainability practices. Constance Belle Mare Plage demonstrates continuous improvement of its environmental performance through the reduction of its consumption of resources including, water by 2% and electricity by 24%; reduction of its waste volume by 2% and PET water bottles by 7%; resulting in an overall reduction of its carbon footprint by 6%.
To achieve such an environmental performance, Constance Belle Mare Plage has developed a sustainability program that facilitates green strategies that encompass the hotel’s overall management and operations. For example, the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system that monitors the energy consumption of each department on an hourly basis assists in ensuring high efficiency while setting reduction goals. Other green initiatives established at the hotel include LED lighting, adjustable taps and shower faucets in guest rooms, invitations for guests to participate in the resort’s linen and towel reuse initiative to lower water and energy usage, development of a large-scale composting program and the introduction of an in-house water bottling plant to reduce waste produced from the use of PET bottles.
Gert Puchtler, General Manager at the hotel, said, “Our aim is to drive Constance Belle Mare Plage to become an ECO Friendly and Green environment for the future.”
Constance Belle Mare Plage has fifteen Green Team members who co-ordinate this massive enterprise. The team work together on instigating the Green Globe criteria and look for areas of improvement within the hotel. They also motivate colleagues and guests to discuss new ideas for possible implementation. Management actively support the Green Team and invest in competency-building programs that result in innovative communication strategies. The Green Globe Showcase was organized to increase awareness of sustainable objectives amongst staff members through participation in fun activities. This strategy proved particularly successful amongst guests who were even keener to take part in Green Globe initiatives.
The hotel is also actively involved in various community development activities, ranging from the purchase from suppliers adhering to ecological sustainability practices to the contributions made through its Corporate Social Responsibility Program. Constance Belle Mare Plage invests generously in educational programs and the development of environmental programs within local schools and colleges.
