20th edition of the Mégavalanche on Reunion Island set for end of November

20th edition of the Mégavalanche on Reunion Island set for end of November ( The twentieth edition of Mégavalanche, which is THE downhill mountain bike race on Reunion Island, will take place on the west coast of the island on Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29. This is an opportunity to take on the double Olympic champion Julien Absalon racing the trail of Maido, which has become the downhill mecca par excellence for all the real and wannabe champions.

So grab your helmet, your bike, and let the journey begin! Mégavalanche is an ultimate mountain bike race which transcends the Maïdo trail to reach the west coast of Reunion Island.

The highlight of this sports event is to gather under the same running conditions, champions, performance enthusiasts, amateurs, and fans who come to see the men separated from the boys of the sport.

This year the Mégavalanche revives the spirit with a mass start, particularly during the qualifications of Saturday, November 28. These spectacular online departures will see groups of fifty riders start from Bellemène to the finish line near the Temple of Water Mill, on the road of the Tour des Roches.

The rules are simple: Score the best time to win the best possible position on the starting line-up of Mégavalanche Sunday, November 29, just like in a Formula One race.

Following the placement of qualifying races, the first 25 of each heat qualify for the Mégavalanche Professionals and the following 25 and all other challengers then qualify for the Megavalanche Amateurs.

Some hundred participants are expected to take part in the Mégavalanche 2015, alongside Champion Remy Absalon who will try for the first time to win twice in a row, following his victory in the Mégvalanche of the Alpe d'Huez - the largest fall of the world - which took place in the month of July.

On the trails, the mountain bikers will also face Lapeyrie Thomas, the second in the Mégavalanche Alpe d'Huez 2015, enduro specialist Alexandre Cure, and Cédric Garcia whose reputations precedes them.

The local elite participating are notably Jordan Payet, a member of the France team Junior DH and DH champion of France Cadet 2014; Alexandre Sicard, champion DH Master Meeting 2015 and the fourth of the 2014 edition of Mégavalanche; and Pascal Yen Pon, multiple champion of Reunion DH and XC.

This year the Mega Marmaille will be held for the first time on Saturday afternoon. This marathon downhill competition is especially dedicated to children and represents about a quarter of the official route of Mégavalanche. Whether large or small, mountain biking on Reunion Island has only one single constant: how to learn to keep balance on two wheels and not fall off even at the steepest downhill sections!
