Uganda named Best Value Destination for 2016
The region comes in at no. 3 on the Lonely Planet list. This endorsement is also confirmation of the initiative by the East African countries to market the region as a single destination. Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda also have a single visa system that allows travelers to access all the three countries with the visa received at the port of entry. This allows tourists to travel without any hindrances and to enjoy what each country has to offer.
From November 2-5, Uganda and her East African neighbors will be exhibiting at the WTM London Expo at the Excel Convention Centre in London. The countries will hold a number of joint events to market the region.
The accolade is the latest of many that Uganda is getting. Just early this month, Uganda won best exhibitor at the Magical Kenya Travel Expo in Mombasa City. Uganda's profile as the preferred destination is growing. With 11% of the world's bird species (more than what North America has), Uganda is a birders paradise. In November, birders will be in Uganda for the big birding day.
This will be before Pope Francis, the people's pope, visits from November 27-29. Francis is the third sitting Pope to visit Uganda. The biggest attraction for the Pope and others popes before is the Uganda Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo near Kampala City. In the late 19 Century, 45 young men chose death for their belief and faith, over a life of denial. Since then Uganda has become a major pilgrimage destination for Christians from around the world.
Talking of the world, in December some of the top stars in football history will descend on Uganda. Already Patrick Kluivert the Dutch and Barcelona star has visited. Early December, the Barcelona Legends will be in Kampala for a friendly match. While here, they will have an opportunity to sample the wonders of Uganda- the mountain gorillas, the source of the Nile, and the cultural diversity.
With the growing interest on Uganda and East Africa, it is expected that 2016 will see more tourists visiting.
