Dresden distinguishes itself as a Congress Venue
Dresden, Saxony's capital with approximately
510,000 inhabitants, already has an excellent reputation as a city of art and culture. The treasures in the museums are innumerable, the architectural beauty breathtaking, the variety and the standard of musical life steeped in tradition amazing and the romantic landscape which reaches along the Elbe into the city centre is surprising.
In June 2005 Dresden's Elbe Valley was thus officially awarded the title “World Heritage" from the UNESCO Commission.
It is therefore hardly surprising that approx. 10.3 million tourists visit Dresden every year and almost 3.5 million overnight stays are booked. In the year 2006 alone more than 912,000 persons took part in 13,500 conferences and congresses. The average length of stay was 1.9 days. The proportion of international conferences and congresses rose from 15% to 18%. The Business Sector was represented at the trade fairs and congresses in Dresden with a considerable proportion of 43%, followed by the fields “Medicine" (25%) and “Service Sector" (14%).
The Technical University with more than 34,000 students as well as numerous other universities and research establishments, amongst them 30 Fraunhofer Institutes and the Max-Planck Institute, make Dresden a significant centre of science and research. The medical faculty in particular with its numerous research establishments has also been able to set a strong course internationally.
Moreover Dresden is an important centre of commerce with a highly modern industry in the areas of Microelectronics, Pharmaceutics, Precision Technology and Biotechnology, and of late, through Volkwagen's Transparent Factory also the Automobile Industry. In the area of Nanotechnology Dresden also has the chance to become one of the most important centres in Europe.
Unique in Germany is the recently achieved union of
25 companies in the congress sector as a joint venture. The “CongressInitiativeDresden" was established on 6th April 2005 with the objective of strengthening Dresden as a congress venue and of developing new marketing approaches. Dr. Michael Hupe, Managing Director of Dresden Airport GmbH was appointed Spokesman for the Initiative.
Amongst the members of the Initiative are conference venues, conference and congress hotels, congress agencies, technology service providers as well as transport companies.
In order to make the marketing of the City of Dresden for the congress and conference sector even more effective the CongressInitiativeDresden, which was established in April 2005, was integrated on 13th September 2006 into the Dresden Convention Bureau e.V. (DCB).
One of the most important objectives of the DCB is the strengthening of Dresden's position in the congress and conference sector as well as the supporting of companies based in Dresden who are active in this field.
Of late the retail industry is also represented within the Dresden Convention Bureau. At the beginning of January the DCB was able to welcome as its 25th member the Altmarkt-Galerie Dresden which, as the leading representative of the retail industry, will in future complement the business activities of the DCB.
With the opening of the International Congress Center (www.dresden-congresscenter.de) in the spring of 2004 the congress venue Dresden became even more attractive. Its unique position on the green banks of the Elbe, amidst the historic city centre, makes the Congress Center especially interesting.
Moreover the unusual architecture of the Congress Center created by the architects Storch/Ehlers from Hannover will inspire the up to 4,150 conference participants: the transparent building with its various levels tapering towards the Elbe presents a panorama view of Dresden's city silhouette.
The Exhibition Hall 1 can be used for even larger events. The Messe Dresden is situated approx. 1 km west of the Congress Center and is a successful combination of historical and modern architecture.
In addition to many well-equipped conference venues and hotels one can find the ideal ambience for various events in more than 25 unusual event venues such as castles, manufacturing plants and museums.
The Dresden congress agencies organise eventful supporting programmes of the highest professional quality.
The sector Congress Marketing and Service of the DWT provides comprehensive information on conference and congress venues and professional congress agencies, advises on the choice of event venues, undertakes the booking of accommodation and the organisation of supporting programmes.
