Meet green at InterContinental Berlin
The InterContinental Berlin is a reliable partner for numerous customers in the German and international meeting and event business. With 558 guest rooms and 45 event rooms ranging in size from 38 to 1,520 sqm and a total conference space of more than 6,200 sqm, the InterContinental Berlin ranks among the largest conference hotels in Europe.
Green Globe congratulates the InterContinental Berlin on its recent re-certification and on its outstanding compliance score of 90% against accredited criteria.
“We are extremely delighted that the InterContinental Berlin has been re-certified for the third time with the Green Globe Certification in 2015. Providing customers with an environment friendly option to host their meetings and events is very important to us," said Robert Herr, General Manager at InterContinental Berlin.
“The development of our sustainable operations and green initiatives is part of our daily business - and we work well with the IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) program, called Green Engage, which is very well complemented by the demands of the Green Globe certificate," added Mr. Herr.
Green Engage is IHG’s own global sustainable program that devises green strategies that encompass the hotel’s overall management and operations. The IHG Green Engage online system measures energy and water use as well as waste output. Energy saving strategies at the hotel include the use of renewable energy resources such as solar, wind and water. In addition, 2,000 old lamps have been replaced with environmentally friendly LED lighting or energy saving light bulbs. And, the extensive use of motion sensors and timers, the installation of “master switches” that control lighting in each guest room and a centrally controlled ventilation system that regulates temperatures in rooms and public areas has resulted in significant reductions in electricity usage.
Water saving initiatives have been implemented such as linen and towel reuse programs, and water saving devices have been installed in guest, staff and public bathrooms. To reduce its impact on the environment the InterContinental Berlin prefers biodegradable detergents and cleaning agents. Also, the hotel’s roof and exterior walls are covered with moss and plants, providing insulation during the colder months and reducing carbon emissions.
To reduce waste a comprehensive and effective recycling program is in place. Recycling efforts are conducted at events and balls, back of house offices and during the hotel’s daily operations. Also, a waste compactor is utilized, products are bought in bulk and the purchase of disposable cups and tableware is avoided as part of InterContinental Berlin’s waste management strategy.
