Survey projects higher spending on travel by Hong Kong residents

Survey projects higher spending on travel by Hong Kong residents ( In a survey conducted during the two public days of Hong Kong’s only international travel expo, ITE & ITE MICE, held in mid-June this year, 62% of the respondents indicated they will increase their travel frequencies in the coming twelve months, while only 5% will cut back, with the rest maintaining the same level of frequency. Also, about half of all respondents plan to spend more on travel in the coming twelve months, while only 7% will cut back and the rest maintaining the same level of spending. By travel spending and frequency, those indicating increases far exceeded those cutting back respectively by 7 to 12 times!

Findings of the survey thus support a positive outlook for the travel market in the coming twelve months. The two public days drew 57,500 public visitors, mostly from Hong Kong, and 488 effective interviews were made then.

Findings indicate that the public visitors of ITE & ITE MICE are more mature, as 62% of them were aged 35 or above. Among all respondents 58% were female, supporting the widely-held wisdom that women are either more interested and/or playing an active role in travel. Those with post-secondary and university education respectively accounted 30% and 39%; the higher education levels are good indicators that they would more likely be in the higher income brackets.

Public visitors of ITE & ITE MICE are seasoned and sophisticated travelers. Only 28% of respondents joined package tours, while respectively 63% and 9% travel in FIT and tailor-made groups. Also 37% of them made three or more overnight leisure trips, 33% made two and only 6% have not made any in the past twelve months.

ITE & ITE MICE are organized by TKS Exhibition Services Ltd. and supported by China National Tourism Administration, Hong Kong Tourism Board, Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong, and Macau Government Tourist Office. The events this year drew 650 exhibitors from 50 countries and regions, and 12,900 trade and corporate visitors in the two professional days with respectively 20% from mainland China and 15% from abroad. The 23rd edition of the Travel Expo will be held from June 11 to 14, 2009 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.
