L'Express of Mauritius reports on questions to Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister of Tourism & Culture: We want to reinforce the regional identity

L'Express of Mauritius reports on questions to Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister of Tourism & Culture: We want to reinforce the regional identity (Forimmediaterelease.net) L’Express on page 8 published “Questions to Alain St.Ange, Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture.” It reads:

“We want to reinforce the regional identity. This interview with Minister Alain St.Ange explains the difference between Mauritius and the Seychelles, the benefits of the carnival to the Seychelles, and the annual tourism arrival numbers.”

With a heading, “We want to reinforce the regional identity" the first question asked to the Seychelles Minister was, what does the Seychelles have more than Mauritius, to which Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles replied that what the islands had was its proximity to each other. He said, “In unity we are strong and we must pull our unique selling points together to be able to stand up to our competitors.”

On the question of what does the carnival bring to the Seychelles apart from a hole in the budget, the Seychelles Minister said that the carnival was never created to just try to grow tourism arrival numbers. “We wanted to create an event to bring out the Vanilla Islands concept. The aim was to increase the visibility of the region. This is why we have invited this year 109 press houses. What we wanted above all was to reinforce our regional identity," Minister St.Ange said.

When asked about the number of tourists Seychelles was getting, the Minister said that Seychelles was a small country with a total population of only 90,000 inhabitants and an adult population of only 45,000. Seychelles is today receiving 250,000 tourists annually and has 11,000 hotel beds. “The number of tourists today jumped by far the total population of the islands. This is why we are looking at how to now control the numbers even though tourism remains the pillar of the Seychelles economy," Minister Alain St.Ange said.
