Tourism Cares Assumes Administration, Disbursement of ASTA Foundation Funds

Tourism Cares Assumes Administration, Disbursement of ASTA Foundation Funds ( Tourism Cares, the non-profit group dedicated to promoting responsible and sustainable tourism, has assumed the administration and disbursement of all American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) Foundation Scholarship funds.
When combined with Tourism Cares, the $1.4 million in the ASTA Foundation funds will bring Tourism Cares' net assets to nearly $3.5 million.
“To manage and distribute these prestigious ASTA scholarships alongside our own scholarship program is both an honor and a privilege for Tourism Cares," said Bruce Beckham, executive director, Tourism Cares.
Since 1982, 20 scholarships of varying amounts have been granted annually to both travel professionals seeking to further their education and to students pursuing bachelors, masters, doctorates, community college or hospitality-school programs. The funds for these ASTA scholarships will continue to bare their namesakes, but will be transferred to Tourism Cares' guardianship. Tourism Cares will continue to honor all original bequests relating to the ASTA Foundation Scholarship funds.
“The transfer will allow the ASTA Scholarship Foundation to benefit from the full-time administrative and fundraising activities Tourism Cares can provide," said Bill Maloney, CTC, ASTA executive vice president and COO. “While ASTA will retain control over a pool of non-endowed funds, we saw this as a way to enhance public awareness of the funds."
The American Society of Travel Agents, founded in 1931, is the world's largest travel trade association, with more than 20,000 members in 140 countries. As part of its continuous mission to enhance and improve the business of travel, ASTA created a non-profit subsidiary, the ASTA Foundation, as a way for a community of private-sector professionals to positively impact the public population through research grants and scholarships.
Tourism Cares, established through the combination of the National Tour Association's National Tourism Foundation and the United States Tour Operators Association's Travelers Conservation Foundation, was designed to serve as a mechanism by which the travel industry's corporate sector could implement responsible business practices and give back to tourism related natural, cultural and historic sites worldwide. As part of this mission-in addition to organizing clean-up projects and awarding grants -Tourism Cares presents academic and service-learning scholarships each year. Since 2004, nearly $50,000 in scholarships have been granted each year to students throughout North America.
Tourism Cares is a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity that mobilizes the travel and tourism industry to give back to society through grants to natural, cultural and historic sites worldwide; through academic and service-learning scholarships for students of hospitality and tourism; and through the organization of volunteer efforts to clean up and restore tourism-related sites in need of care and rejuvenation.
