Magnum Foundation launches Magnum Legacy, a new series of richly illustrated biographies on the lives and work of Magnum photographers

(Forimmediaterelease.net) Magnum Foundation is launching a new series of richly illustrated biographies on the lives and work of celebrated Magnum photographers. The first title, Eve Arnold, lands on shelves on April 21st - taking us behind her lens with personal musings and contact sheets from her extensive archive.
With the publication of Eve Arnold by Janine di Giovanni on April 21, 2015, Magnum Foundation is launching a new series of illustrated biographies about the lives of Magnum photographers between and around their photographs. This first book traces Eve Arnold’s life and achievements through the prism of her extensive archives.

“No photographer better represents the link between the founding generation of Magnum Photos and the present than Eve,” said Susan Meiselas, President of the Magnum Foundation. “She started alongside Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson in the fifties and was active until she was eighty-five. Devoting the first volume of the Magnum Legacy to Eve felt especially fitting.”

The Magnum Legacy series addresses the creative processes of Magnum photographers, from the agency’s early founders to more contemporary members, with biographical text, archival materials, and iconic imagery. Published in partnership with Prestel, each book will include a comprehensive narrative by a leading author supplemented by contact sheets, caption notes, tear sheets, and diaries, as well as an illustrated chronology of the photographer’s life.

The next title in the Magnum Legacy will be Bruce Davidson by Vicki Goldberg, coming out in spring 2016. Forthcoming titles in the series include Inge Morath and Josef Koudelka.

“Little has been published about how the personal experiences of these renowned photographers shaped their commitment to telling stories. This series invites us to imagine their world on the other side of the lens,” said Andrew E. Lewin, Managing Editor. “The ultimate goal is to produce books that work on many different levels, and appeal to the general reader as well as someone with a particular interest in the photographer.”

Prestel publishes fine books in art, photography, architecture, and design. Founded in 1924, Prestel has offices in Munich, London, and New York. Photo historian Carole Naggar is the series editor.

Magnum Foundation seeks to increase the impact of both historical and contemporary documentary photography in today’s shifting media terrain. The Foundation offers support, training, editorial mentorship, and distribution guidance to independent photographers producing stories on under-reported and emerging social justice issues. The Foundation’s Legacy program preserves the rich photographic history of the greater Magnum Photos community, making their extensive visual archive available as a resource to historians, scholars, and the public.
