Corporate Review Discusses with B+B SmartWorx, formerly B&B Electronics, and Its Expanding Role in Making the Internet of Things a Reality
O’Gorman adds, “The current mobile Internet has more than 2 billion users, but the potential of the IoT is up to 30 billion devices connected by 2020. We’re focused on ensuring the devices in that environment have the intelligent connectivity that will be required.”
Founded in 1981 as B+B Electronics, the company has undergone a transition in the last few years, with new technologies leading it to a new position in the IoT industry and the decision to change its name to B+B SmartWorx (See January 20, 2015 press release.). While continuing its tradition of developing mission-critical network connectivity technology for remote or demanding environments, B+B SmartWorx is ramping up the intelligence in that connectivity piece, embedding intelligence throughout the network connectivity stack, from edge device to network backbone.
B+B’s new technologies – the Wzzard Intelligent Sensing Platform for creating wireless sensor networks (WSNs), and its SWARM intelligence-based cellular edge gateway devices – combine to form the B+B SmartWorx IoT Edge Processing Architecture.
Glen Allmendinger, president and founder of Harbor Research, is familiar with B+B’s technology roadmap. “B+B’s robust connectivity products – Wzzard, Spectre cellular routers and some upcoming IoT gateways that are extremely innovative – bring intelligence to the network edge and effectively simplify the connectivity stack between assets and applications. The company has already attracted an impressive array of ecosystem partners that will help speed the realization of IoT solutions for integrators, service providers and OEMs.”
The company has received numerous awards, including the 2014 EDN Hot 100, 2014 IoTA Most Innovative Connectivity Solution, 2014 IDTechEx Best Technical Development of the IoT, 2012 M2M Product of the Year Award, Product of the Year from Control Engineering in 2012 and 2013, and Security Product of the Year in Perimeter Security in 2014.
Concluding his comments, O’Gorman notes, “Research shows that while the current attention is on individual Internet users, the industrial applications will far outstrip these numbers in the coming years. We are leveraging our long history of machine-to-machine connectivity solutions and enabling them for Internet protocols.”
JL Haber, Vice President of Programming of Corporate Review, comments, “While many viewers have not yet heard of the IoT, they will find it plays a key role in shaping their future use of the Internet and most electronics. We take pride in identifying and providing publicity to such companies as B+B SmartWorx and the innovative solutions they provide.” Tune in to watch the B+B SmartWorx segment airing on Bloomberg Asia Pacific (as pd. prog) on April 12, 2015 at 3:00pm HKT.
