A colorful walk through the gardens of Endsleigh

A colorful walk through the gardens of Endsleigh ( To walk the gardens at Hotel Endsleigh is to enjoy the masterpiece of the celebrated landscape gardener, Humphry Repton, 200 years ago. Wander around a colorful garden paradise, enjoy the arboretum in its prime, follow the historic pathways into a sense of JRR Tolkien´s “Middle Earth” and listen to the calming sound of water in the many waterfalls, pools and streams. The picturesque valleys are planted with terrific trees and shrubs, collected by the plant hunters of the 1800´s. There is an enchanting serenity to the landscape that offers up a sense of wellbeing making Hotel Endsleigh and its stunning 108 acre setting within the Tamar Valley, the perfect haven for garden lovers. It also explains why the hotel recently won the Boutique Hotel Award, “The World´s Best Relaxation Retreat”.

The inspiration behind the creation of Endsleigh was Georgina, 6th Duchess of Bedford and is the result of collaboration between the architect, Sir Jeffry Wyatville and famous landscape designer, Humphry Repton. The year was 1814, when the spot, having previously been chosen for its natural and picturesque beauties by Georgina, was laid out by Repton who delivered his plans to the 6th Duke of Bedford in the last of his famous “Red Books” , where he commented: “It is impossible to divest myself of the feeling that the most picturesque subject on which I have ever been professionally consulted, should have been reserved to so late a period of my life”. He created the “Red Books” to help clients visualize his designs and to show before and after views. A copy of Humphry Reptons “Red Book” for Endsleigh is at the hotel and can be seen by the guests
