Florida International University’s College of Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) Alumnus Andy Senor Jr. to Receive Distinguished Alumni Award at Torch Awards Gala
Senor was born and raised in Miami. As a child, he grew up surrounded by legends of Latin music, raised in a family that worked professionally in the entertainment industry. A 2013 graduate, he holds a BFA in Theatre from Florida International University and further trained at the Public Theatre Shakespeare LAB where he appeared in All’s Well That Ends Well.
Senor made his professional debut in the Tony Award-winning musical Rent as “Angel," playing the role on Broadway, London’s West End, and US National and International Tours. He later became the Assistant Director to Michael Greif on the Rent revival Off Broadway, and went on to re-stage the production in Tokyo, Japan. Also, he directed the historic production of Rent in Cuba, in Spanish, which received global accolades and extensive international media coverage.
Recently, Senor worked with Jeffrey Seller as assistant director on the new musical Fly at Dallas Theatre Center and is currently Associate Director to Jerry Mitchell on the Broadway-bound Gloria Estefan musical, On Your Feet. He is the Artistic Director of the District Stage Company in Miami. His film and television credits include Dummy, Lola, Ed (NBC), appearances on Regis and Kelly and The Rosie O’Donnell Show, and as a presenter on the Latin Billboard Music Awards, as well as many commercials and music videos.
The Torch Awards Gala was founded by the FIU Alumni Association in 2000 to honor their most outstanding alumni. Proceeds from the event will support the future construction of the FIU Alumni Center, which will serve as a central gathering space for students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of FIU, as well as FIU’s First Generation Scholarship Fund. More than 50 percent of FIU undergraduate students will be the first generation in their families to earn a college degree. The Fund is matched by the State and 90 percent of Fund recipients are minorities, making it a critical priority for the institution.
