California Travel and Tourism Commission Launches New Web Site

California Travel and Tourism Commission Launches New Web Site ( Potential travelers to the Golden State want to be Californian, if only for a week or weekend, and they’re turning to California Tourism’s redesigned Web site,, to learn how to do just that.
The California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC), the state’s official organization for promoting, marketing and increasing travel and tourism to the state, recently launched an improved and redesigned central Web site, based on recent findings from focus groups that visitors to the Golden State want to be “honorary Californians” and experience fully the state’s easygoing culture and lifestyle like a local resident.
“It’s not enough to just have an online presence, especially in the competitive world of tourism,” said CTTC President and Chief Executive Officer Caroline Beteta. “Visitors need to fall in love with our destination for the first time or all over again, and that means providing not only ‘Must Sees’ about well-known state landmarks and attractions, but highlighting ‘Inside Scoops’ about where to go and what to do – all in a visually appealing, fun format that stays true to California’s unique brand.”
From where to sip a drink at a casual Los Angeles hideaway, to enjoying the good life at a posh Napa Valley spa, to catching some rays on a warm San Diego beach, CTTC has captured the local hotspots and hidden state treasures on For those who like a pre-planned itinerary, the site offers a new menu of “Trip Ideas,” complete with Google maps and an easy to follow navigation system.
But what truly makes California’s Web site unique among competing destinations’ is that consumers can drill down as deep as they want for content, by region or sub-region, about interesting California activities and attractions typically enjoyed by local residents. These “Inside Scoops” and “Must Sees,” provided by category and region, offer visitors a whole new way of planning the perfect California vacation. Additional bonuses to potential visitors are the Web site’s improved travel tools, such as regionally-customized, interactive maps that display recommendations, search results, and video to highlight the best features of each region. The maps are designed to bring a level of real-world visibility to many California locations and to help inspire potential visitors with moving landscapes and in-depth views on places to visit. The redesigned site also links visitors to other sources of rich California content, such as the state and national parks system.
In addition, a new “Lifestyle” section of the Web site was created to give visitors the ability to capture what it means to truly live like a Californian. New and fresher content was added in this section, and niche travelers can search categories, such as “Eco-Awareness,” “Gay and Lesbian” and “Diversity.” This new section also better integrates California’s cultural and heritage resources and provides extended interviews with California celebrities, giving visitors the “Local Scoop.” With just a click on the site’s home page, international travelers can now view California’s travel Web site in eight languages, including Spanish, German, Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and French.
It’s not just consumers that are benefiting from California Tourism’s enhanced site. For California visitors and convention bureaus, chambers of commerce, destination management organizations (DMOs) and assessed businesses, the redesigned Web site allows for improved advertising placement with two, easy-to-see spots above the fold. Links to California Welcome CenterSM (CWC) locations have been integrated throughout and threaded within suggested trip itineraries, giving the Welcome Centers heightened visibility and providing visitors with easy-to-find retail locations for California information. The site’s new “Find a Destination” search application has also been integrated into the page design, so that when visitors search for a city, all local visitors and convention bureaus, chambers of commerce and DMOs are easily accessible.
The CTTC is a non-profit organization with a mission to develop and maintain marketing programs - in partnership with the state’s travel industry - that keep California top-of-mind as a premier travel destination. According to the CTTC, travel and tourism expenditures total $93.8 billion annually in California, support jobs for 929,000 Californians and generate $5.6 billion in state and local tax revenues.
