David Raiklen composes the score for PBS documentary Mia, A Dancer's Journey
Acclaimed Hollywood composer David Raiklen, whose credits include action classics such as Universal Soldiers, provides the powerful score behind upcoming drama Mia, A Dancer’s Journey.
The Blythe Danner-starring drama screens at the Lincoln Center on January 31, and on PBS throughout January and February.
It tells the powerful true story of Mia Slavenska, one of the most celebrated ballerinas of the 20th century. Croatia’s greatest dancer, and a pioneer in American ballet, Slavenska’s tale is brought to the screen courtesy her daughter Maria Ramas and Kate Johnson.
Raiklen, who went from working on science-fiction series Space Command to a dramatic portrait of a real-life artist, used everything from Balinese Gamelan to Solo Violin to Gypsy Guitar in crafting the score for the biopic.
Just as Slavenska was a master of her craft, so is David Raiklen. The teacher and composer has been scoring films since the age of 9, and has been studying keyboard and composing since the age of 5. Taught by some of the best – including Star Wars and Jaws maestro John Williams – Williams has composed music and sound design for theater (Death and the Maiden), dance (Russian Ballet), television (Sing Me a Story), cell phone (Spacey Movie), museums (Museum of Tolerance), concert (Violin Sonata), and film (Appalachian Trail). His compositions have been performed at the Hollywood Bowl and the first Disney Hall.
