Middle Aged Adults, Not College Kids, More Likely to Drink Themselves to Death, Warns Chapters Capistrano

( Chapters Capistrano reveals the disturbing truth that middle aged adults are particularly likely to die of alcohol poisoning.
While binge drinking is something most commonly associated with young people—particularly those still enrolled in college or university—recent findings reveal that heavy drinking may be more dangerous and problematic among middle aged adults than any other population. According to The Atlantic, those who have reached middle age are the most likely to die of acute alcohol poisoning. Chapters Capistrano has responded to this troubling report with a new statement to the press.

“The conventional wisdom may dictate that alcohol poisoning is something that largely impacts collegiate binge drinkers, but the facts reveal another story,” says Mike Shea, the founder of Chapters Capistrano, regarding the negative impact of drinking. “The grim reality is that deaths via alcohol poisoning overwhelmingly come from older adults.” According to The Atlantic, more than 75 percent of all alcohol poisoning deaths, from 2010 through 2012, came from adults ages 35 to 65.

Alcohol poisoning is one of the many lethal consequences of heavy drinking. Essentially, it means that alcohol reaches the blood, in such high concentration, that parts of the brain simply shut down.

As for why middle aged adults are more susceptible to this, The Atlantic offers this explanation: “It may be that older adults have had more time to develop alcohol dependence, thus putting them at higher risk than college-aged drinkers.” The report also notes that many of these cases involve individuals who do not identify as alcohol-dependent, and who are not technically alcoholics.

“Whether you are an addict or you aren’t, drinking to excess comes with potentially dire consequences,” Shea remarks. “It’s critical to get help while you can and when you can.”

According to Shea, those who struggle with heavy drinking and alcohol abuse can receive individualized care at Chapters Capistrano, an Orange Country drug and alcohol rehab center. “We have medical professionals who will evaluate your drinking and your addiction, and chart an effective course toward health, hope, and recovery,” he confirms.
