Reunion Island’s City of St. Paul awarded French Coral Reef Initiative prize

Reunion Island’s City of St. Paul awarded French Coral Reef Initiative prize ( The City of St. Paul on Reunion Island was awarded the IFRECOR (French Coral Reef Initiative) prize on November 25, 2014. The IFRECOR palms contest rewards and promotes the actions of a community for the preservation and sustainable management of coral reefs, mangroves, and sea grass beds. The City of St. Paul was distinguished for his project in the Reef Check “Education and awareness" category.

Launched in 2003 on Reunion Island, the program intends to monitor the health of the reefs and educate islanders and tourists about the sustainable management of Reunion Island’s seabed. With the help of volunteer divers, courses and practical excursions are organized to teach respect, understanding, and for people to take ownership of the biodiversity of St. Paul’s reef.

The goal of IFRECOR is to promote the protection and sustainable management of coral reefs in the eight French communities overseas, divided into three oceans. IFRECOR monitors all actions and measures for coral reefs.

St. Paul, on the west end of Reunion Island, is one of the largest municipalities in France which extends over 24,000 hectares of Mafate coast line. Its lagoon is protected and secure, and provides transparent turquoise waters suitable for swimming. The Boucan Canot beaches of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains and the Hermitage are, in turn, with the Blue Flag.
