Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo: 5 years of commitment to sustainability
Located in the busy downtown of the Sri Lankan capital, this luxury hotel is a serene retreat covering seven acres of gardens and pools. And as its name declares the hotel overlooks the Beira Lake, a tranquil habitat for many bird species including Spot-billed Pelicans, White-breasted Kingfishers and Red-wattled Lapwing.
During its five-year engagement with Green Globe, Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo has made significant investments to become an environmental leader for hotels in the capital.
Mr. Dermot Gale, General Manager at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo said, “We are proud of the achievements we have made with regards to sustainability at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo. Creating awareness is the key to strengthening green initiatives which is why we encourage awareness among not only associates, but guests as well, to ensure that our high standards are always in place.”
Mr. Thivanka Thabrew, Assistant Manager Quality Certifications at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, oversees a long list of activities that help to meet Green Globe criteria, and more importantly contribute to better environmental outcomes.
Mr. Thivanka Thabrew said, “Some of our sustainability achievements include the implementation of energy saving bulbs by replacing CFL bulbs with LED in all 346 guest rooms, as well as 80% of the public areas of the hotel; this significantly reduces energy consumption.
“We also recycle cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminum, waste paper, burnt-out bulbs, electronic waste and we use garden waste to produce compost. This same compost is used in our organic garden where 10 varieties of vegetables are grown for use in the kitchens. We also actively harvest rainwater for outdoor use at the hotel,” he added.
Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo associates attend regular training sessions to promote awareness of energy and water conservation and waste management in and around the hotel. Sustainability criteria are incorporated into purchasing policies ensuring that preference is always given to local suppliers who follow environmentally friendly policies.
Cinnamon Lakeside associates have also been responsible for assisting with community projects outside the hotel. During the extensive renovation of the world-renowned Abeygiriya Dagoba, hotel associates took the twelve hour round trip to the ancient Buddhist site and participated in the reconstruction by re-laying the century old bricks of the temple dome.
