Green Globe inspires green teamwork at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray
George Fares, Director of Engineering said, “Achieving Green Globe certification is a great credit to Jumeirah Zabeel Saray and we are thrilled to have been recognized and awarded with an outstanding score of 90%. We are proud to be recognized for the award and aim to be accredited year upon year.”
From its opening, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray has implemented water and electricity saving measures wherever possible. A solar water heater at the Plaj Restaurant provides cost effective hot water using free fuel generated from the sun. The property also has a STP (sewage treatment plant) to treat effluent and recycle it for irrigation in the resort grounds and gardens. In addition, the resort has its own organic chef’s garden, where aromatic herbs and a multitude of fresh fruit and vegetables are grown.
Responsible environmental planning is further displayed with the utilization of composite decking. Instead of using traditional wood, Eco-Wood has been purchased for the construction of decking for all external areas of the resort around the pool bridge, villa terraces, the swimming pool and the Plaj Restaurant.
George Fares, Director of Engineering added, “We have opted to use Eco–Wood for the resort decking as we strongly encourage preservation and maintenance of ecology and natural resources towards achieving a greener earth. Eco–Wood is environmentally friendly as it is a feasible and practical timber free alternative solution to usual decking. In addition, Eco-wood does not require the use of hazardous and flammable compounds.”
Guests and visitors are informed about water and electricity conservation and appropriate energy and waste saving initiatives. The hotel’s policy on paper reduction starts with a paperless check in and promotional materials in rooms are strictly limited in comparison to other 5 star hotels. Concierge staff use iPads to assist guests with enquiries and a paperless check out is also offered rather than printing tax invoices or, if needed, guests can receive bills directly via email. The use of paper has also been reduced in back of house operations and the resort encourages all staff to reuse or recycle paper.
As part of Jumeirah Zabeel Saray’s corporate social responsibilities the resort helps children in Nepal by selling candles to guests. Funds raised from sales are donated to a non-profit organization that supports the poorest children in rural Nepal by providing them with opportunities through educational and personal development.
Green Globe Middle East Preferred Partner, Farnek Middle East LLC, has independently verified the sustainability achievements at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. Sandrine Le Biavant, Director Consultancy, said, “The enthusiasm and dedication of the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray team has been impressive. The Green Globe Certification has been a catalyst in fine-tuning their processes and in the implementation of their responsible actions. The hotel new initiatives show that sustainable thinking brings alternatives and creative solutions enhancing their customers’ luxury experience.”
“It is also commendable that the resort can count 37 UAE Nationals as colleagues and has set a target of always retaining a minimum of 32 UAE Nationals every month. Furthermore, to encourage the continuance of Emirati traditions, the Executive Oriental Chef, Musabbeh Al Kaabi promotes local produce and Emirati cuisine to guests,” added Ms. Le Biavant.
