The Netherlands embraces Green Globe
Green Globe’s Dutch members come in all types and sizes from budget stays, to chic boutique hotels, luxury seaside resorts and major conference and business hotels. These certified properties are located in major and regional cities including Amsterdam, The Hague, Maastricht, Voorburg, Noordwijk, Schiphol and ‘s-Hertogenbosch. And familiar brands like InterContinental, Mövenpick, and Hyatt’s Andaz, as well as locals such as, Beaumont, De Hotels Van Oranje, Conservatorium, Sir Albert, Qbic, Park Hotel and Park Plaza have all chosen to join the Green Globe family.
A key part of Green Globe’s success is to partner with local experts. In Holland, Green Globe’s Preferred Partner is Duurzame Hotels Nederland B.V. a specialist consultancy focused on bringing sustainable management practices to the nation’s thriving hospitality industry.
Dr. Sarah Jenny is Director at Duurzame Hotels and believes the main reason that hotels in the Netherlands chose Green Globe is the international character of its sustainability standard and comprehensive range of its criteria.
Dr. Jenny says, “The criteria satisfies the highest international standard for sustainable tourism. And because the criteria are applied the same in every country, it allows a transparent understanding of the hotels’ sustainability achievements. This is especially important in a city like Amsterdam, which hosts offices of numerous international companies.
“Moreover, Green Globe is about much more than saving water and energy. It is also about caring for your employees, letting the local community benefit from your hotel business, maintaining cultural heritage, knowing your suppliers and giving preferences to sustainable practices and products. By implementing the Green Globe criteria, hotels are not only implementing sustainable practices, they are improving the way they operate,” added Dr. Jenny.
On a recent visit to a number of its members across Holland, Green Globe discovered that its certification is also working well at securing hotel bookings. Meetings and conference planners are particularly keen to know that the hotels carry a certification that is internationally recognized. At the same time Green Globe is also helping leisure hotels better communicate their support of local tourism to guests coming to enjoy the culture and heritage of one of Europe’s most popular sightseeing destinations.
