Congress Union Celle generates energy for green meetings
Key to this success is the pursuit of Green Meetings, where advanced technological knowledge and access to renewable energy sources is combined with the integration of management systems based on green concepts. For event planners across Europe, these low environmental footprint, locally supplied events are now a major part of the conferencing industry.
The Congress Union Celle is one of four sustainably certified convention centers in the state of Niedersachsen. Sustainability Officer at Congress Union Celle Sascha Hilgendorf, said,” In July 2014 we officially received our Green Globe certification. The Congress Union Celle received a very good result receiving a high score of 81 % of the approved indicators and is willing to improve on this result during the coming years.”
“Important features of our detailed sustainability management plan are reducing consumption, creating sustainable supplier and contractor partnerships and improving staff relations. We are very proud to be managed by the international company Althoff Hotel Collection and appreciate their advanced training management strategies.
“In our food&beverage department we are happy with our regional supplier partnerships and the delivery of fresh, seasonal and local groceries. We hope that our “Green Meeting convention fixed rate” will attract future clients of events to be held at the Congress Union Celle,” added Mr. Hilgendorf.
At the ceremony to present the Green Globe Certificate to the Congress Union Celle, the Mayor of Celle, Dirk Ulrich Mende attended along with representatives from business and tourism organizations to announce this important award to local media.
Utilizing access to advanced technology, measures have been put in place for reducing energy consumption including the use of a photovoltaic system, and cogeneration unit as well as an ionization unit to filter air inside the convention center. In 2013, this system generated enough energy to provide nearly 50 private houses with electricity. In addition, Congress Union Celle together with its partner the Nature Office (www.natureoffice.com) offers offsets for carbon emissions generated by events that are invested in a reforestation project in Togo, Africa ( www.project-togo.de ).
Green Globe Director of Communications, Bradley Cox, said, “More than 80% of event planners surveyed by leading German tourism bodies have indicated that the number of green meetings were expected to remain the same or increase in the coming years. The trend indicates to companies and businesses involved in the MICE industry worldwide that sustainable practices are attractive and offer sound economic advantages.”
