InterContinental Vienna Hotel bee-ing sustainable

InterContinental Vienna Hotel bee-ing sustainable ( LOS ANGELES, California - The InterContinental Vienna Hotel, the first IHG hotel to be certified by Green Globe, recently received its re-certification.

Brigitte Trattner, General Manager of InterContinental Vienna, said: “We are very happy to have achieved the Green Globe re-certification this year. It proves that we are on the right track and we shall certainly continue looking for ways of saving energy, avoiding and separating waste and protecting the environment. This kind of thinking is certainly incorporated into our offerings to guests and meeting organizers."

The InterContinental Vienna works with Green Engage, IHG’s own global environmental program to reduce its carbon footprint. The hotel has implemented green solutions that are aimed at reducing the usage of energy, water and waste, lowering carbon emissions, reducing operating and maintenance costs, and raising guest and staff awareness of sustainability issues.

Each hotel department examines the ecological impact of its operations and devises procedures that support the hotel to become “greener” by measuring, managing and reporting on their energy, water and waste consumption. In addition training is provided to help employees use the sustainability initiatives and understand the purpose and goals of green hotel management strategies.

To encourage guests to be environmentally responsible in their choices, front-of-house staff as well as signage and other literature draw attention to the green efforts of the hotel. In return guests are provided with feedback on their energy and resource usage during their stay. And alternative means of transportation such as e-cars and e-bikes are also available.

Vienna is home to an increasing number of bee colonies with bees feeding on an ever changing variety of flowers growing in meadows, trees, roadside verges, in gardens and on rooftops. The InterContinental Vienna now produces its own sustainable in-house honey for guests to enjoy.

Mrs. Trattner concluded: “We are especially proud of our rooftop bee hives that guarantee the pollination and continued existence of green spaces in Vienna. And also, the honey tastes great."
