Skinvisible Develops New Acne Formulations with Adapalene ( Skinvisible Develops New Acne Formulations with Adapalene
- - New Product with Invisicare Targets $2.8 Billion Acne Market

Skinvisible continually looks for active ingredients in dermatology products where patents are expiring. One such ingredient is Adapalene. Adapalene was approved for the treatment of acne in 1996 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and will come off patent in 2010 in the United States. For the countries where no patent exists and for future U.S. distribution, Skinvisible has successfully developed both a gel and cream Adapalene based product made with Invisicare and has applied for new patents. Adapalene is generic in many countries and Skinvisible is seeking to license the new formulas in those countries.

Acne is a condition which affects over 17 million people a year in the United States, with almost 85% of those people being between the ages of 12 and 24 years of age. The prescription and over-the-counter sales of acne products worldwide was $2.8 billion in 2005, with $1.3 billion in the US for prescription products alone. One class of acne products are called retinoids. Retinoids, like adapalene, make up the largest portion of the acne market with 60.4% market share. Some topical retinoids have produced $170 to $200 million in sales annually in the US.
