ICTP: Making mega events a Green Growth showcase
“Mega events are promoted and viewed across the planet: they are the catalyst for nation branding and public engagement on a massive scale. They involve big government, big business and big bucks. It`s time to build Green Growth even more fundamentally into the bidding, selling and executing process.”
He said that much has been done in recent years by event organizers and successful bidders in terms of environmental impact cover, carbon offsetting and what is broadly called legacy. Now it is time to link this to the broader Green Growth transformation.
Lipman said that in 2015 two major interrelated global summits - on Climate Response and on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - will hopefully see global leaders reset our planetary patterns of consumption, production and investment towards a better world. More energy and resource efficient, inclusionary, fairer and conservation conscious; as we strive to reduce poverty and stabilize temperatures simultaneously through green growth.
Mega-events are global showcases and as such will surely have to reflect these evolving patterns. And if our sector is smart we will capitalize on that to accelerate and demonstrate our own transformation. Much of what will be needed is already in train - It is being written into national and international development strategies. Crafted into CSR and impact investment programs. And most importantly, being taught in schools.
Future hosts can play a big part by using the SDGs to advance coherent new green growth based systems and structures that automatically help reduce poverty, meet carbon targets, as well as spread the benefits across the value chain, including small companies, rural communities and even small countries who can`t ever hope to be hosts.
In short to develop mega-events so that they encourage and help deliver green growth value for the sustainable future we need.
