“Carnival of Carnivals” to put climate response in the spotlight

“Carnival of Carnivals” to put climate response in the spotlight ( HAWAII, USA; BRUSSELS, Belgium; VICTORIA, Seychelles; BALI, Indonesia - The 4th edition of the Carnival International de Victoria was this year again a vibrant success, for the Seychelles and the Vanilla Islands. It gathered a record number of international delegations, each showcasing their own culture, but all expressing and spreading the same joy and good spirit of carnivals. It also involved the next generation in a big way with the “Kiddies` Carnival,” for schools, with each class coming up with its own theme and making beautiful costumes out of used and recycled materials, designed to illustrate the vision of the nation for conservation and smart development.

A this occasion, a strong delegation of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP) composed of its President Professor Geoffrey Lipman, its Chairman Juergen Steinmetz, and its Membership Liaison Marie-Julie Chaput were in attendance, on the invitation of Tourism and Culture Minister Alain St.Ange.

He said: “As one of the founders of ICTP, I am a firm believer in its mission of Green Growth and Quality. Our commitment as a nation is very clear in this regard, and our Carnival should be a major driver and showcase. We face a common challenge, with our Vanilla Islands partners, of responding to the reality of building a sustainable future against the disruptive backdrop of our rapidly moving world and the imperative of responding to a changing climate.”

Over the coming year, ICTP will work with the Seychelles Tourist Board (STB) and its stakeholders, as well as its partners to link leading edge international Green Growth thinking and Quality practices with the homegrown local action, in Seychelles and across the Vanilla Islands. And to do so from the grassroots joy and optimism of our “Carnival of Carnivals.”

Professor Geoffrey Lipman President of ICTP said: “This region, as much as any in the world, embodies all of the unique qualities of tropical island tourism, as well as all of the challenges of small island states who are in the front lines of the planetary response to climate change. It`s great to engage with the communities in such a positive way and particularly with the schools, where the idea of Green Growth is already well understood.” Lipman was just back from Canada where he took part in the 85th birthday of Maurice Strong, one of the fathers of the sustainable development movement and the man behind the 1992 Rio Earth Summit that set the stage for our common global response.

The Vanilla Islands concept is the result of an affiliation of regional island nations: Seychelles, Madagascar, La Reunion, Mauritius, Comoros and Mayotte, who have formed an exciting new travel destination brand. Created in La Reunion on August 4, 2010, the aim of this co-operation is to jointly market the region rather than each member “going it alone” to gain market share from the competing tropical islands of the world.
