Ruby Falls sets highest standard for sustainable sperations

Ruby Falls sets highest standard for sustainable sperations ( LOS ANGELES, California - In celebration of Earth Day, Green Globe Certification is proud to announce re-certification of Ruby Falls, one of the most unique natural attractions in the world. Ruby Falls was the first business of its kind in the U.S. to earn this distinction in 2010, and continues to set the highest standard for sustainable management and operations.

“We are committed to the reduction of our environmental footprint, while providing a better experience for our visitors,” said Hugh Morrow, President of Ruby Falls, L.L.C. “The transformation of our 80-year old natural attraction into a more sustainable operation was quite a challenge, which we were happy to take. While our environmental journey will never be complete, third party certification is crucial to keeping us focused on more environmentally sensitive business practices.”

Ruby Falls strives to not lose focus on eco-friendly initiatives, such as using UV water technology, LED fixtures throughout the cave, solar panels, carpool perks for employees and a hybrid vehicle for brochure distribution. It is also one of Chattanooga`s first host sites in the installments of electric vehicle charging stations.

The array of solar panels is capable of producing 16,000 watts of renewable energy, enough electricity to light over two hundred and fifty 60-watt light bulbs, or to operate 16 microwave ovens at full power. Ruby Falls has saved almost 1,000,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from their solar panel installation in 2009. This has offset the use of approximately 51,000 gallons of gasoline, the equivalency of about 5300 round trips from Atlanta to Ruby Falls.

For its notable accomplishments in sustainable tourism development, safeguarding local culture and protecting the environment, Ruby Falls was recognized with the Tourism for Tomorrow award last year. In addition, the attraction earned a platinum ranking to the city in its Valley Sustainable Communities program, a top environmental sustainability rating. Ruby Falls` contribution is one of many made by entities throughout the city to increase the quality of the environment for visitors to Chattanooga.

Ruby Falls is home to America`s deepest commercial cave and largest underground waterfall open for public viewing. It features a 145-foot waterfall located 1,120 feet beneath the surface of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Ruby Falls holds the record of being America`s most visited underground waterfall. Annual visitation of this 80-year old natural attraction, which is listed in the National Register for Historic Places, exceeds 400,000.
