Rosalie Bay Resort one of the world`s best ethical destinations
In a recent survey compiled by California non-profit Ethical Traveler, Dominica joined the “Top 10 Ethical Destinations” list. The list is created based on 35 metrics in four categories: environment protection, social welfare, human rights, and animal welfare. For ethical properties within a country, the site Green Travel Reviews evaluates environmentally and socially conscious properties. The goal of this ethical travel movement is to encourage responsible globetrotting.
Rosalie Bay Resort is the only Green Globe certified resort in Dominica, and has won accolades for its wind- and solar powered energy, including more than 200 solar panels, locally- and organically sourced food, and protected black sand beach, where endangered sea turtles nest.
“I believe that we, as a tourism entity, have a responsibility to the traveling public and the beautiful destination we represent to use natural resources in a way that protects the local environment, and improves the well-being of its residents,” said Owner Beverly Deikel.
Built by hand over the course of nine years Rosalie Bay Resort is a dream and labor of love for owners Beverly Deikel and Patris Oscar. They created an eco-resort to share the beauty of the island with visitors, empower the community, and protect the environment. Today, the resort continues to be a major source of employment for the local villages, and continues to support local businesses.
Beverly Deikel partnered with WIDECAST and other organizations to establish a sea turtle conservation program on Dominica. The Rosalie Sea Turtle Initiative engages locals and guest in opportunities to help in the recovery of sea turtles on the island and throughout the Caribbean. The program includes night patrol during nesting season, clean up on nesting beaches, education programs and data collection. In 2003 there were only seven leatherback nests. By 2010 there were 69 nests of three species of sea turtles: leatherback, hawksbill and green – and a 100% survival with all nesting species protected.
